Churches Pavia

The wonders of faith and the marvels of architecture in splendid religious buildings

Church in Pavia, what to see? The city has kept in its historic center churches and monuments that reflect its glorious medieval past.

One of the structures you must see in Pavia is the Cathedral that the locals call Duomo and the San Michele Maggiore Basilica. They are among the most important shrines that over the centuries have hosted lavish ceremonies such as the coronation of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I.

Stop by the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine during your visit, which is one of the finest examples of gothic lombard architecture. Its characteristic red brick front makes it stand out along the church's high clock tower.  Another church in Pavia that needs to be visited is known as San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro, displaying an internal golden dome that gives it its name. Philosopher Anicius Severinus Boëthius is buried in the crypt beneath this church.

On the other hand, you can admire at the Presbytery the Ark of Saint Augustine, a real masterpiece comprising of marble relief statues sculpted by master chiselers in the XIVth century.

Besides enjoying the charm of a church in Pavia, visitors can go to the outskirts of the province. The Certosa is one of these attractions. This fascinating monumental complex was commissioned by Galeazzo Visconti has a monastery, a shrine and a museum.
