In the province of Pavia, in addition to the Ticino Park, there is a network of protected areas created to safeguard the most important ecosystems for biodiversity conservation and environmental protection. The first nature reserves were established in the 1980s with the goal of protecting the populations of herons nesting in the provincial territory at their breeding sites: the heronries.

Thus, the Nature Reserves and Natural Monuments of Lomellina and Pavese were born, which, over time, have become a recognized and indispensable part of the Po Valley landscape. Among the Natura 2000 areas, there are currently thirteen of the fifteen historic heronries managed by the Province of Pavia (now classified as Special Areas of Conservation - SAC) and four Special Protection Areas (SPA) established to protect European birds.

Since 2017, the new sites of Le Torraie-Monte Lesima and Sassi Neri-Pietra Corva have also become part of the network, created to protect the extraordinary biodiversity of the Oltrepò Pavese. In the heart of the Sassi Neri site operates the historic Pietra Corva Botanical Garden, now the Research Center of the Northern Apennines.
