10 Reasons to visit Vigevano

The ducal city that surprises!

There is a city in Lombardy that few expect to be so extraordinary. Vigevano, in the heart of the province of Pavia, is one of the forgotten capitals of the Italian Renaissance: a place that Ludovico Sforza transformed into a laboratory of art and architecture, that welcomed Leonardo da Vinci within its walls, and that today reveals itself as one of the most fascinating cultural destinations in Northern Italy. If you are planning a day trip from Milan, a visit to the Pavia area, or a weekend combining art and nature, here are ten good reasons to put Vigevano at the top of your list.

Vigevano is located about thirty kilometers from Milan, easily reachable by car or public transport, and represents the natural gateway to the Lomellina: a vast plain of rice fields, canals, and farmsteads stretching to the Po River and the border with Piedmont. Choosing Vigevano as a base makes it easy to plan itineraries towards the Certosa di Pavia to the east, the Oltrepò Pavese to the south, or the rice lands to the west.

The city offers a good range of accommodation, restaurants that showcase local Lomellina cuisine, and a calendar of cultural events and historical reenactments that bring it to life throughout the year. Vigevano is not just a stop along the way: it is a destination to be experienced at a relaxed pace, allowing yourself to be surprised by its treasures one after another.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vigevano (FAQ)

Is Vigevano suitable for a day trip?
Yes. Vigevano is perfect for a day trip, but those who wish to explore the castle, museums, and the natural surroundings of the Parco del Ticino at a more relaxed pace may prefer to stay at least one night.

How much time do you need to visit Vigevano?
To visit the historic center, Piazza Ducale, the castle, and at least one or two museums, you should allow at least four to five hours. If you also plan a walk in the Parco del Ticino or a visit to Sforzesca, a full day is ideal.

How do you get to Vigevano?
By car, Vigevano can be reached from Milan in about 50–60 minutes via the SS 494 “Vigevanese,” or via the A7 Milan–Genoa motorway, exiting at Binasco, Bereguardo (Pavia Nord), or Gropello Cairoli, then continuing on local roads. Bus connections from Milan and Pavia are also available.

The city is served by the Vigevano railway station, located on the regional line Milan San Cristoforo–Mortara, which provides connections to Milan and the Lomellina area, with onward links to other regional rail destinations.

Is Vigevano suitable for families with children?
Absolutely. The castle, the Mulino di Mora Bassa—featuring reproductions of Leonardo’s machines—and the Parco del Ticino offer engaging experiences for children of all ages. The historic center is partially pedestrianized and easy to explore.

Is Vigevano close to Pavia?
Yes. Vigevano is about 40 kilometers from Pavia and can be reached by car in under an hour. The two cities can easily be combined into a single itinerary to discover the province
