The experience and passion of the growers of precious grapes have brought Oltrepò wines to international fame. Every municipality is worth a visit to discover ancient defensive strongholds, abbeys—including the remarkable one dedicated to Sant'Alberto di Butrio—and historically significant churches. Visitors can also enjoy local products, attend music festivals, or take part in lively village fairs.
A stop in Salice Terme, a renowned spa town, and in Varzi, a charming medieval village, is a must. The Po, Italy’s longest river, originates from Monviso and flows for 673 kilometers before emptying into the Adriatic Sea. This major waterway crosses the province of Pavia for 113 kilometers from west to east, separating the flatlands from the hilly and mountainous area, which is aptly named Oltrepò.
It is, therefore, a true natural dividing line, crossed only by the bridges that humans have built over the river, essential for connecting the two parts of the province. The Po, characterized by lush flora and fauna, comes alive in the summer with boats and sunbathers who gather on its magnificent, expansive beaches—ever-changing each year due to the powerful spring floods.
A land of simple and authentic rural traditions—this is the Oltrepò Pavese, which greets visitors with rolling hills and wide, sunlit valleys. The dominant crop here is the vine, reigning supreme over the landscape. Oltrepò wine is among the most renowned in Italy and is produced in numerous prestigious cooperative wineries scattered throughout the region. Barbera, Barbacarlo, Sangue di Giuda, Frecciarossa, and Clastidio are just a few of the most celebrated wines that this fertile land generously offers.
