National Archaeological Museum of Lomellina
Inaugurated in 1998 and expanded in 2006 and 2018, the museum is located in some very evocative spaces of the Sforza Castle in Vigevano. It houses archaeological findings from excavations or occasional discoveries in the Lomellina area, with the aim of spreading knowledge and enhancing its accessibility for a wide audience visiting the city and its monuments.
The museum rooms contain sections covering various periods, from the Prehistoric era to Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. The large hall adjacent to the 15th-century stables houses the Prehistoric and Protohistoric section. The stables are dedicated to the Late Celtic and Roman necropolises, which represent the most significant archaeological evidence of the area.
Among the funeral goods, in addition to terracotta vessels and metal tools and ornaments, particular attention is given to glass items, prized for their variety and beauty of forms, and to the coroplastic items, which, although less refined, provide interesting insights into funerary rituals. Two other rooms are dedicated to daily life in the Roman era and to artifacts from Late Antiquity and the Medieval period. The final room is reserved for rotating exhibitions; since 2015, visitors have been able to admire the exhibition "Lights on the Past: Roman Lamps in Lomellina."
Room V currently houses, since December 2023, the complete Strada collection exhibition.
Direct access from Corso della Repubblica no. 36, Neo-Gothic Atrium.
For those accessing from Piazza Ducale: climb the staircase leading to the Castle courtyard and walk across the courtyard to the opposite exit onto Corso della Repubblica. The museum is located under the arches of the Neo-Gothic Atrium.
The museum, previously managed by the Lombardy Archaeology Superintendence, is now under the Regional Museum Network of Lombardy, a peripheral body of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities.
The museum is part of the MUVI - "City of Vigevano" Museum System.
