Sunday, 13 September 2026, Lomellina invites visitors to slow down and discover one of its most authentic landscapes through a day dedicated to rice, cycling tourism, nature and local culture.

The event “From the Rice Fields to the Village: an experience among rice-growing culture, cycling and Lomellina traditions”, organised by the Strada del Riso dei Tre Fiumi, offers a cycling itinerary through the rice fields of Lomellina, historic farmsteads, the rural landscape and the historic centre of Mortara.

The meeting point is at 9:30 am at Cascina Alberona in Mortara, the starting and finishing point of the day. The route is flat and easy, making it suitable for participants aged 12 and over. The event is scheduled to run approximately from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm.

The day begins with a guided tour of the rice mill at Cascina Alberona, offering an insight into the different stages of rice processing, from drying and cleaning to packaging.

It is an opportunity to discover the close relationship between the Lomellina area and its most characteristic agricultural product. The rice field is not simply a production area: it is one of the defining features of the Lomellina landscape, shaped over the centuries by farming and the presence of water.

After the visit, participants will set off by bicycle on a cycle excursion accompanied by expert nature guides through the Lomellina countryside. The route offers the chance to explore the rice-field ecosystem and experience a landscape of fields, farmsteads, country roads and small villages.

The cycling itinerary includes a stop in Olevano Lomellina, where participants will visit the Museum of Rural Art and Traditions, dedicated to the heritage and culture of the farming community.

The lunch break will provide another opportunity to discover local flavours, with a risotto tasting served at the museum.

The programme will then continue towards Mortara, where a qualified tourist guide will accompany participants on a tour of the historic town centre. The bicycle thus becomes the ideal way to connect the countryside with the area's cultural heritage, travelling from the rice fields of Lomellina to the history and architecture of the town.

In the afternoon, participants will enjoy a cultural walk through Mortara before returning to Cascina Alberona and bringing the day to a close.

“From the Rice Fields to the Village” is also designed for those who would like to take part without bringing their own bicycle.

The participation fee is €15 per person and includes the guided rice-mill visit, assistance from nature guides during the cycling excursion, risotto tasting, guided tour of Mortara's historic centre and insurance.

A limited number of bicycles are also available for an additional €5. The Strada del Riso provides just 9 bicycles, including mountain bikes and city bikes, which will be allocated in booking order. Participants are also welcome to use their own bicycle.

Those bringing their own bike are advised to check the condition of the brakes, gears, wheels and tyres beforehand. Comfortable clothing suitable for the season, water, sunscreen, insect repellent and a helmet are recommended.

The event offers a different way to experience Lomellina, away from the pace of traditional tourism. Cycling allows visitors to explore the landscape slowly and appreciate details that can easily be missed when travelling by car: the geometry of the rice fields, historic farmsteads, rows of trees, bell towers and traces of rural culture.

The itinerary brings together some of the defining features of the area: rice-growing culture, rural landscapes, cycling tourism, farming traditions, local food and wine, and the historical and artistic heritage of Mortara and Lomellina.

To ensure a high-quality experience and safety along the route, the event has a limited number of places. Advance booking is therefore compulsory. The organisers also specify that the event will take place once a minimum of 10 participants has been reached and may be cancelled in the event of rain, in accordance with the conditions indicated by the organisers.

From the Rice Fields to the Village takes place on Sunday, 13 September 2026, with participants meeting at 9:30 am at Cascina Alberona, Mortara (Pavia). The route is flat and easy and is suitable for participants aged 12 and over.
